When you walk down the dental aisle of your favorite supermarket or drugstore, do you get anxious scouring all the various choices to find what you are looking for? Whether you are trying to find the best mouthwash or dental pick, you don’t have to take it home to try it out for yourself just to see if it works. You can look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance right on the packaging.
The ADA is an association that protects consumers by scientifically and extensively testing dental products. It is a patient-centered, science-based and ethically-driven association having done extensive research on all products carrying its seal. It does not receive payment for its endorsements. It ensures that any product carrying its seal actually lives up to the marketing claims on the packaging. Thanks to the ADA, there are over 300 dental products carrying the Seal of Acceptance, which not only means that it was rigorously tested and found to be safe, but that it is actually effective at what it claims to do.
To give you an example, the following ADA Seal Statement can be found on the product, Save-A-Tooth, which is an emergency tooth preserving system:
“The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs’ Acceptance of Save-A-Tooth is based on its finding that the solution in Save-A-Tooth has been shown to increase the survival rate of a knocked-out-tooth, when used as directed. Although data show that the solution is effective up to 24 hours, the survival rate is highest if the knocked-out-tooth is implanted by a dentist within one hour.”
The ADA sets the bar for 1) how dental products and technologies should be defined, 2) how they should perform, and 3) how the products and technologies need to be able to work together. They are the exclusive standard setters for dental products in the U.S. and also participate in international standards development. ADA standards are so high that companies carrying their seal frequently have been asked to meet standards that are higher than what the law requires.
So the next time you head down the dental aisle to find a quality product that is both safe and effective, just look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance and you can’t go wrong.
