If you were to ask a family member or friend if they want a white smile, they would almost assuredly say yes. Teeth whitening is the most requested service in cosmetic dentistry, but many patients turn to home remedies out of convenience, curiosity, or to save a few bucks. The internet is full of recommendations for whitening your teeth with ingredients found in your kitchen, but how effective are these methods? Dr. Nancy Urquiola is pleased to offer her opinion on whether the following at-home teeth whitening tricks actually work:

Strawberries and Baking Soda
Supposedly, you can lighten your teeth with a mixture of strawberries and baking soda. However, this mixture is only effective in removing residue and plaque and does little to whiten your smile.

Oil Pulling
Another at-home remedy is swishing coconut oil around in your mouth, a practice known as oil pulling. While there are no known dangers of oil pulling, it does not appear to have any benefits either, at least not where teeth whitening is concerned.

Charcoal

Brushing with charcoal has become a very popular practice recently, but very few studies have been performed on whether this method is effective or includes any negative side effects. There is a chance that the abrasive substance of the charcoal can cause damage to the tooth enamel.
